There Is Always an Exception to the Rule
by Chris King

In previous articles, I have stressed how important it is to neither read nor memorize your presentation. The first can alienate and /or bore the audience, while the second can easily trip you up when you forget a word or phrase.

Well, I was recently captivated and enchanted by a presentation given by a successful woman and speaker who read her whole hour and fifteen minute speech. Looking around the room, I observed that the other audience members felt as I did. How did she achieve this exception to the rule? And why did she choose to write out and then read her whole presentation when she was obviously in touch with her subject? What made this technique work for her? Read on to discover my take on the “Exception to the Rule!.”

What NOT to Do As a Presenter
by Chris King

Up to now, the majority of my articles have dealt with what to do to become a more effective presenter. In this article, I have decided to take my lead from Vincent Flanders and Michael Willis. They maintain the website and have written the book Web Pages That Suck: Learn Good Design by Looking at Bad Design. So following their approach, I am hoping you will learn good presentation techniques by my pointing out what not to do when presenting. Remember the following are techniques to AVOID.

Be late for your presentation, or rush in at the last minute, just in time. This will convince the meeting planner and the audience members of how busy a person you are. You didn’t even have time to call them to let them know you were on the way.

How to Use the Power of Questions
by Chris King

Sam Deep and Lyle Sussman in their excellent book What to Ask When You Don’t Know What to Say write, “Questions have the power to turn confusion into clarity, resistance into acceptance, division into consensus, and the frustration of not knowing what to say into the satisfaction of having said it. …

Simply understand and accept what effective communicators already know: Questions are magic.” As presenters, we need to know and realize the power of asking questions — before, during, and after our presentations. In this article, I will share some ideas about how to use the magic of questions.
