UK Brit Awards remove separate categories of male and female artists in revamp designed to make music awards more inclusive

LONDON (AP) – The organizers of the Brit Awards announced on Monday that they are removing the separate categories of male and female artists in a revamp designed to make music awards more inclusive.

Next year’s awards will feature trophies for the British and international artist of the year, replacing the male and female awards in each category. Organizers said the change would celebrate artists “only for their music and their work, rather than how they choose to identify themselves or how others may see them.”

The 2022 ceremony will also include four new awards for different genres, decided by public vote: alternative act / rock; hip hop / grime / rap number; dance number and pop / R’n’B number.

The moves are the latest changes in response to criticism that prices haven’t long reflected the diversity of British music. In 2017, the academy of over 1,000 music industry professionals who choose UK winners was expanded with the aim of making it more balanced and diverse.

The Brit Awards 2022 ceremony will take place on February 8 at the O2 Arena in London, hosted by comedian Mo Gilligan.
