Carly Michaels named October Volunteer of the Month by Del Mar Community Connections

Carly Michaels, a former 2016 Volunteer of the Year recipient, was named October Volunteer of the Month by Del Mar Community Connections.

Nicole Holliday, DMCC Board Member, congratulated Michaels on her beautiful design of the decorations for the DMCC Annual Benefit Gala. In addition to his work on this committee, Michaels sits on the Social and Good Times committee, drives seniors to medical appointments and organizes group van rides. Michaels even taught his “Sweet Hour” dessert-making class on Zoom for months during the pandemic and distributed the resulting treats to seniors in the community.

Originally from Upper Saddle River, New Jersey (“Last outing from the boardwalk before you get to New York!”), Michaels went to art school and later cosmetology school and worked in entertainment, fashion, hair and makeup. She married her husband Hal in 2008, and they have called Del Mar home since 2011. Michaels also has an adult daughter named Holly who lives in Los Angeles and works as a professional competitive tennis player with the intention of becoming a coach. private. Michaels’ other child is of the furry variety: a small and adorable silk dog from Havana named Gladys. Michaels enjoys spending her free time cooking, listening to music, gardening, taking photos, playing pickleball – and she’ll be the first to admit that she spends a lot of time shopping.

Michaels says she volunteers because she feels like it’s a gift to her: “Helping people is so rewarding. Making someone happy, making them feel important, or helping them achieve something is very rewarding. I really enjoy hearing the life stories and experiences of older people. You learn a lot if you listen.

The hosts of the DMCC shopping vans spend four hours on an occasional Wednesday and provide physical assistance to seniors getting in and out of the van, helping with shopping bags and helping to keep the conversation going. Michaels says, “DMCC is very well run and they are always open to hear new ideas or how to improve the programs. The people included are amazing.
