Church celebrates 145 years of service

MAYSVILLE—Maysville was home to the first Christian church in 1828. Nearly 50 years later, the land where the church still stands was purchased. The Gothic-style church was built less than a year after the date of purchase and included an interior baptistery. This new interior plumbing was a welcome improvement over previous baptisms in the cold waters of the Ohio River. In 1891, the church had a congregation of 700 registered members. Five years later, these Maysvillians renovated the building and had magnificent stained glass windows installed. At least three of the windows are said to have been made using Tiffany stained glass. In 1909, the church announced the first pipe organ. A community effort was needed to raise funds and the Ladies’ Aid Society provided assistance. Maysville was soon able to enjoy the organ concerts held in the church.
