Himaya’s Music: A mix of old school and new sound. . . a marriage of two worlds

For the multigenerational group Himaya, strength lies in the varied musical influences and experiences of its members. “There are age differences between us, but we made it an advantage. The diversity of experiences and tastes, we can integrate them and bring them together through collaboration, ”said guitarist-singer Aio Barcelona during a recent virtual conference for the soundtrack they wrote for the upcoming film by teenage mystery comedy “Caught in the act.”

Music for all

“We’re mixing old school with new sounds. So now we’re creating something different… a marriage of two worlds, ”Aio said of the band, which was formed by his father, singer and guitarist Alvin Barcelona, in 1997. The pop-rock group Inspirational is also made up of pioneer members, bassist James Aguilos, keyboardist Jeric Milson and guitarist-vocalist Mike Nuez. Drummer Gab Espinosa like Aio is a Generation Z musician, who joined the band only five years ago. Because they don’t have ankles or adhere to any particular trend, the group, Aio pointed out, always has something for everyone.

“There is classic old-school rock, as well as modern sounds with new beats,” said Aio, who is also a member of the popular Catholic cult group Feast Worship. “Sometimes I would like to do something inspired by Ben & Ben and John Mayer when my dad wants something from Queen or Eric Clapton.”

“But it’s an advantage because we can reach different audiences. No one is alienated on our shows – we can do, say, VST & Co. for the older generation, then do Coldplay for the younger ones, ”he added.

Being surrounded by older musicians, Aio said, helped him and Gab develop a deeper respect for “the music that came before us.” And on the other hand, his band mates are also willing to adapt to new developments in music. “Now we are updated by young people! Said Alvin, who is also a Catholic lay preacher. “The sound of the band has evolved since its formation and we make sure to adapt to changing times, but without compromising the core and the message of the band. “

Praise to the group

Alvin, who played the lead role of music icon Freddie Aguilar, said Himaya – Cebuano for “fame” or “praise” – started out as a praise band and then moved on to folk and secular music. The group has spent the past 24 years releasing original and independently produced singles and albums. In 2019, the group was signed by PolyEast Records under which they released the song “Payakap”.

Distributed by Star Music, the soundtrack compilation is called “Inner Love” and includes six original songs: “Nariyan Ka Lang Pala” and “Tanging Hiling” (sung by Andi); “Sabihin Ko Na Ba” (Bamboo B.); “Huwag Muna Ngayon” (Jhassy Busran); “Ako Muna” (Aio); and “Huli Ka” (Alvin). The songs are also accompanied by video clips on the Star Music YouTube page.

True to Direk Perry’s vision for the film, Himaya, with input from songwriter Henry Ong, has crafted a set of melodies that revolve around self-esteem, but with different sounds and feelings: slow rock, pop, R&B.

“I spoke to these very promising young singers that I worked with to get a feel for their personalities and to see their strengths as singers… to come up with songs that would suit them,” Alvin said. INQ
