Offensive coordinator Menlo School-Atherton Austyn Carta-Samuels said ahead of Friday’s 42-0 win at Capuchino-San Bruno that the quarterback Sergio Beltran is “one of the most humble children I have ever met in my life”.
Then Beltran came out and totaled 396 yards and six touchdowns to take the Knights to 17th at 8-0 overall, 4-0 in the Ocean Division of the Peninsula Athletic League.
The senior completed 16 of 20 passes for 254 yards and five touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 142 more and one more score.
His season totals: 138 passes for 185 (75%) for 2,253 yards, 61 carries for 651 yards and four scores.
Pass touchdowns? A lot.
His five Fridays have given him an academic record of 40 this season, beating the previous regular-season mark set by the future Stanford and 49ers quarterback. Jean Paid (1982) and equaled by Jack heneghan (2013).
According to the Cal-Hi Sports record book, Beltran is within the regular season mark of 41 from the center section of the hill set by Monta Vista-Cupertino. Ryan hancock in 1989.

âA lot of that comes from the receivers and the O line,â Beltran told Menlo School’s communications content editor. Pam mckenney. âThey make my job so easy. I just have to give them a playable ball and I know they will do something from nothing. So it’s all because of them. I’m just in a lucky position.
Carta-Samuels, a former All-Metro quarterback at Bellarmine before playing for Wyoming and Vanderbilt, and second-year head coach Todd smith smile at Beltran’s summary. There is some truth to this, but it’s clear the Knights are the lucky ones to have Beltran running the show.
âHe’s doing an amazing job,â Carta-Samuels said. “If he leads forward – as he always does – they are just following his example.”
Friday, Carter Jung and Tyler flynn each caught two touchdown passes and Jack Giesler added another. None measured more than 14 meters. Menlo School’s defense recorded their first shutout; in five other wins, the Knights have allowed a touchdown or less. The opposition was dominated 376-65.
âWe’ve been training hard all week and the defense has done a great job as always,â said Beltran. âWe’re going to treat every game, every opponent, like Capucino with the utmost respect, and we’re just going to do it. We don’t want to be in a position where we are lagging behind and have to use all of our energy to come back. “
It’s music to the ears of Smith, who said his team is in sync far beyond the football field. The Knights travel to Carlmont-Belmont (1-7, 0-4) on Friday night before hosting their rival Sacred Heart Prep-Atherton (3-5, 2-2) at the annual Valparaiso Bowl on November 6.
âWe complement each other everywhere. ⦠On the training ground. In the games, âSmith said. âThese are our players, our coaching staff. ⦠These are our relationships. It goes way beyond match day.
Carta-Samuels said, âOur preparation. ⦠The maturity with which the team approaches the practice and the way they perform, it doesn’t surprise us when we shoot all cylinders.
COVID-19 issues: The highly anticipated Oak Division game of the North Bay League between Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa (5-2, 2-0) and host Windsor (7-0, 2-0) was called off last Friday due to COVID -19 issues within the Cardinal Newman program.
Coach Windsor Paul Cronin said on Monday that as the playoffs approached, there was no makeup date available. Cronin coached 18 seasons at Cardinal Newman before leaving for Windsor in May. Cardinal Newman is set to play at No.18 Rancho Cotate-Rohnert Park (7-1, 3-0) on Friday.
“It’s unfortunate for the kids, on both sides,” Cronin told the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. âIt’s like you’ve dug your pool and someone is filling it with cement. “
