Phish’s Trey Anastasio posted a 19-minute video on his social media with a lesson for budding musicians and said others would follow. The guitarist focused on rhythm in the first installment of the instructional video series.
Anastasio explained that he thinks not only do many music instruction books and videos complicate the basics, but social media often leaves him feeling awful. This new series will address both issues by giving interested individuals the tools to achieve the same joy and pleasure he derives from playing the guitar.
“I had this flash moment where I could do very small music lessons for young people, who are starting any instrument and share some of the things I learned and used [social media] for something a little more positive,” Trey said at the start of the video. “I go to bed early because I can’t wait to wake up and play guitar in the morning. I wish everyone had that feeling, so maybe I can help with that,” Anastasio added.
The 57-year-old musician started playing the drums and suggested those who were just starting out should do the same. He also advised novices to “love the music first and listen to everyone, listen to anything”. Trey chose JJ Cale, D’Angelo (Voodoo in particular) and Billie Holiday as musicians who “explored the depths of rhythm better than anyone [he’s] already heard.” Anastasio then started discussing the beat and demonstrated how to split the beat while being accompanied by a metronome.
Trey gave examples of different time signatures, explained how Talking Heads stay in the light album influenced him and repeated his mantra that anyone can play music. “As long as you’re sitting at home, you might as well get out of the crazy two years that we spend playing an instrument,” he added.
Trey mentioned he’d be back with a new lesson tomorrow near the end of the video, but backtracked a bit as he concluded the clip by saying, “I hope I do it again.” Watch Trey Anastasio’s first social media music lesson below:
