The Redlands Symphony Orchestra will present “A Big Band Christmas Jam”, an evening of holiday classics performed in the style of Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey, on Saturday, December 11 at 8 p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of the University of Redlands .

The concert features singer Alexis Morrast who has worked with jazz greats including Greg Phillinganes, Steve Jordan, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ray Chew, Lisa Fischer, Michael Feinstein and Christian McBride and has toured with Wynton Marsalis and JLCO Band.

The guest chefs are Marshall Hawkins and Gregory Robbins.

Hawkins, a bassist whose career includes concerts with the Miles Davis Quintet, founded the jazz program at the Idyllwild Arts Academy and headed the jazz department of Idyllwild until his retirement.

Robbins, also a bassist, received his formal training at the Yale School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music and in 2019 was appointed conductor of the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra. He recently conducted the Assembly of Shadows Jazz Orchestra’s debut album, which had several Grammy nominated tracks.

“At Redlands Symphony, we do things a little differently,” said Ransom Wilson, music director and conductor of the orchestra, in a press release.

“Our holiday concert this year features all of your favorites, but in swing-era arrangements for a jazz band. Add to that the vocal talents of Alexis Morrast of Jazz at Lincoln Center and you’ve got a winning night of music you can’t miss, ”Wilson said.

The concert will feature seasonal favorites such as “Silver Bells”, “Sleigh Ride”, “Let It Snow”, “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)” and “White Christmas”.

Tickets start at $ 18 and are available at redlandssymphony.com or by calling the box office at 909-587-5565.

Face masks are mandatory, and vaccination status and identification will be checked at the door. Those who have not been fully vaccinated must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of performance.
