‘Shame on you’: activist interrupts Florida governor in coronavirus update

MIAMI, Florida – An immigration reform activist interrupted Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday as he stepped out for a press conference at a Miami hospital amid the recent surge in coronavirus cases in Florida, shouting at the head of the ‘State its response to the international health crisis.

“Shame on you! You are a shame! You are a shame! We get record cases and you do nothing,” said Thomas Kennedy seconds after the governor’s arrival on the podium.

Kennedy, a Miami-based immigration activist with United We Dream, tweeted the video he picked up and identified himself as the person behind the screams that were broadcast live on Florida TV stations broadcasting the press conference. A little over an hour after its publication, the video has been viewed almost 170,000 times.

DeSantis was speaking from Jackson Memorial Hospital on Monday, 24 hours after the Florida Department of Health reported a record 15,299 new cases. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Jackson Memorial Hospital CEO Carlos Migoya also spoke at the press conference.

According to the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration dashboard, 8,085 people are receiving treatment in Florida hospitals for complications from respiratory disease. South Florida, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties continue to report the highest number of cases and hospitalizations overall.

“Shame on you, you should resign,” Kennedy said as he was forced out of the conference room.

As Kennedy was led out of the conference room, he urged security personnel not to touch him. “Social distance,” he said to a man who stood up very close in front of his camera.

“Over 4,000 people have died and you blame the protesters, you have no plan and you are doing nothing,” Kennedy said, addressing the governor and mayor of Miami-Dade County.

Florida’s coronavirus death toll hit 4.38 on Monday, including 104 non-residents who died in the state.

DeSantis continued to give his opening speech for a few seconds, but as Kennedy’s screams continued, he stopped until security escorted the man out of the room.

The governor did not speak or react to Kennedy’s comments.

It is not known how Kennedy obtained access to the hospital conference room.
